If Gibson or Fender made something like the AE185, it'd cost a good thousand more, at least. But again, if it keeps the costs low enough that it'll only cost me $1100 to get a serious tone beast, then so be it. I can't think of any company save for Fender that'd give you a decal rather than an inlay for your $1000-plus purchase. I'm more just irked that, as you pointed out, save for getting a custom truss rod cover w/your name on it (oooooh, now my life is complete.) there's not much that you can do to pimp out the headstock. Plenty more on offer within the catalog. That's what I was talking about the AE185 comes standard with the Gibson-esque headstock I'm paying an extra $100 for the more stylistic, PRS-style headstock (probably the least boring, though that's relative), with the matching finish. Guild Cop圜at Tape Echo as offered in the 1971 Carvin CatalogĪs Carvin still does today, the catalog also includes accessories made by other manufacturers, as well as part and encouragement to ‘build your own!’ The amplifiers ranged in power from 80 watts into 4 ohms up to 160 watts into 4 ohms (2 ohm capable). Years after even tube-based electronics had begun using printed-circuit-boards, Carvin was using point-to-point wiring for their all-solid-state amps. The most interesting thing about the amplifiers is the construction method used. Far and away one of the best books ever written on the subject of a musical-instrument innovator. When you look at these guitars, the overall vibe is not Fender or Gibson… I feel like the closest comparison is the work of fellow Californian Paul Bigsby.īTW, if you have not read Andy Babiuk’s excellent book on Paul Bigsby, spend the $32 and check it out. I am honestly not sure if they made their own solid-bodies, but given that they were making amplifier cabinets, I can’t see any reason why they would not have.
